Working Holidays Australia

by Brandon
(DeKalb,Illinois, United States)

Hey Sharon,

I will be graduating shortly from an American University with a bachelor's in business finance and I really want to live and work in Australia for a period of time. I understand that I can apply for a work holiday visa but I don't currently have the money for that.

I wanted to know what would be a wise path to take. Should I over work crazy right now while I am in the states and save up until the day I will have enough money or do you feel that it would be best to try to get a company to sponsor me and bring me to Australia.

If you choose the latter can you let me know what is the best way to pursue a job in Australia from the United States.

Thank you for your time and effort
Brandon

Working Holidays Australia
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Brandon

Thanks for your inquiry.

Listing the requirements of each visa can help you reach a decision

Australian work and holiday visa (subclass 462) for U.S.A citizens

Who can apply for the work and holiday visa and what can you do?

This visa is for U.S. citizens aged 18 to 30 who want to travel and work in Australia for up to 12 months.

You can supplement the cost of your holiday through periods of temporary or casual employment.

You can only extend your stay in Australia if your Work and Holiday visa is not granted with a 'No Further Stay' condition.

Work and Holiday visa holders without a 'No Further Stay' condition are only able to apply for a limited number of other visas from within Australia.

How much does it cost?

Visa application charges - 230 AUD(not refundable).

Round trip flight tickets U.S.A-Australia and Australia-U.S.A

Pay for private health insurance - As a U.S.A tourist, you are not covered by Australia's national health scheme.

Have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Australia. Generally, AUD 5000 may be regarded as sufficient.

Employer sponsored worker (subclass 457)

Who is eligible for this visa and what can you do?

You can be eligible for this visa if you are sponsored by an employer to fill a nominated position, have skills, qualifications, experience and employment background which match those required for the position.

Employers can be either: Australian businesses or overseas businesses.

You can work in Australia for a period of between one day and four years.

How much does it cost?

Visa application charges - 260 AUD(not refundable).

Flight tickets - depends on your agreement with your employer.

Health Insurance - From 14 September 2009, all new Subclass 457 visa holders are responsible for all health costs for themselves and their family.

Each type of visa has one big challenge:

Working holiday visa - sufficient funds to support your stay in Australia

Employer sponsored worker - finding an employer.

I would therefore suggest the following: Do not choose one of the visa options yet. Start working and saving money, and at the same time try to find an employer to sponsor you in Australia.

Good Luck
Sharon
