Working as an LPN/Enrolled Nurse
in Australia

by Karen
(USA)

I am an LPN in the US, Will be coming to Australia in Dec 09 to assist in home missions for our church.

I want to work at least part-time, but am finding the majority of work visas require you to be under 45 years old. I am 55.

My friend is getting a religious worker visa and they want me to get a nurse visa.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated

Thank You!
Karen

Working as an LPN/Enrolled Nurse in Australia
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Karen

Thanks for your inquiry.

Before I respond I must emphasize that I am not an immigration officer.

According to the department of immigration and citizenship Australia only RN - Registered Nurses are eligible for a work visa.

You can find this information at Australian critical skills occupations list and on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and Employer Nomination Scheme Occupation List (ENSOL)

However, there might be more options to obtain an Australian work visa. I would recommend that you
download Working and Living as a Nurse Down Under

This is an exciting new eBook written by Emma Bates a Registered Nurse from the U.K who is working as a nurse in Australia. This excellent e-books aims to equip internationally qualified nurses with information prior to arriving in Australia and starting work in its health service.

Working and Living as a Nurse Down Under includes information on preparation international nurses need to undertake (and what they need to know) up front, how much it is likely to cost, where they might think about living and how to obtain the right Australian visa, as well as lots of technical information, from hospital contact details and advice on getting a job, to drug calculation checklists and National Inpatient Medication Charts.

Best of Luck
Sharon

Enrolled Nurse to work in Australia
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Busi

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer).

As you are over 50 years old you might have difficulties to obtain the 457 Australian visa. However New Zealand citizens entering Australia are issued with a Special Category Visa (SCV) on arrival, provided they meet security, character and health requirements. An SCV entitles New Zealanders to live and work in Australia as long as they wish.

More information about this visa can be found in here.

Best of Luck
Sharon
