Work Permit for a Spouse of a Canadian Student Visa Holder
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi SN

Thanks for your inquiry (Please note that I am not an immigration officer).

According to Canada Citizenship and Immigration your spouse may apply for a work permit if:

  1. You are a full-time student at a public post-secondary institution, or at a private post-secondary institution that operates under the same rules and regulations as a public institution, or at a Canadian private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees.

  2. You have a valid study permit or you have a valid work permit.

Your Spouse's work permit is valid for the same period of time as your study permit.

Accompanying spouses of foreign students are eligible for an open work permit, which means they do not need a job offer or a labour market opinion from Service Canada.

Please note - You will have to show your marriage certificate to Canada Citzenship and Immigration.

As regards to changing a job - Please read the guide about how to change conditions or extend your stay in Canada as a worker

Re time frame for obtaining a work visa - It is best to check this directly with Canada High Commission in India

Beat of Luck
Sharon
