Work in husbands business?

by Kristina
(Alberta, Vanada)

Hi Sharon!

I live with my Canadian husband in Alberta (we just got married). I´m still here as a visitor (from Sweden) and are about to send in the application for permanent residency in the family class.

My question to you is though I´m not a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant yet, can I still start a company in Canada by setting up a partnership with my husband who is a Canadian citizen?

Very thankful for an answer
Kristina

Can a visitor to Canada work in husbands business in Canada ?
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Kristina

Congratulations on your marriage (please note that I am not an immigration officer).

As a visitor to Canada you are expected to follow the conditions and obligations of a visitor visa holder.

Usually visitors to Canada are not allowed to work or study in Canada unless they are authorized to do so under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. In many cases, a work or study permit will be required.

So it might be better to wait until your permanent residency is approved or you can contact CIC and check if there are any exemptions in your case.

Best of Luck
Sharon
