Will my child be entitled for a free education in Canada?

by Jay
(Dubai)

Hi Sharon,

I am Jay,

My wife and I are working in Dubai right now and our 3 year old son is living with us as well.

We are planning to apply for a Job in Canada.

My question is - If ever we have succeeded to land a job in Canada, will my child be entitled for the free education even if we are just expats?

Thanks, Jay

Will my child be entitled for a free education in Canada?
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Jay

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer).

Canada has a public fund education and all children in Canada have a right to free public education.

As an expat your son may attend school in Canada. However you must apply for his Canadian study permit at the same time as your application for a Canadian work permit.

When you are already in Canada and would like to register your kid for kindergarten (age 4-5) you will need to bring proof of:

1. Age (a birth certificate or baptismal record or passport)

2. Address (two pieces of identification that show your address, such as your telephone bill, drivers license, etc.)

3. Immunization (the card that shows a list of needles your child has received)

4. As an expat you will also need to bring a letter from the school board in your province stating that a space is available. To find out which schools have openings for foreign students, you should contact district school boards and school authorities (for publicly funded schools)

Best of Luck
Sharon
