Why I May Still Be Canadian

by David Lloyd
(Midreshet Ben Gurion, Negev, Israel)

"Why I May Still Be Canadian" is a blog I recently began writing as an exploration into my Canadian identity, or what is left of this identity, after living in Israel for the last 35 years. Originally from Toronto, I came to Israel for a six month ulpan (learning Hebrew half the day and working the other half) on a kibbutz by the Mediterranean Sea. And way led on to way. After 14 years on the kibbutz, where I met my future wife, and where all three of my children were born, we moved to a small community in the middle of the Negev desert, where we have lived for the last 21 years.

Why begin this exploration after all of this time abroad? One of the mysteries in life. This blog is an irreverent look at all things Canadian and Israeli, by a person who cannot truly call himself either, but claims to be both. And if this confuses you, think what it's like to be me. I hope to hear from others who have undergone similar experiences, either through their stories on the Internet, or through their comments to my blog postings.
