Who to Notify when moving Overseas

Hi Sharon,

so, we are looking to move to New Zealand from the US. But, when you move from state to state you need to fill out a Change of Address form each time, and you have to update your Driver's license etc.

But, when you move out of the country, what needs to happen? Who do you need to notify so that you aren't getting notices about jury duty etc., once you are gone.

Please advise.

Dear Brigid

Thanks for your inquiry and good luck with the move to New Zealand.

The bureau of consular affairs of the U.S department of state has published on their website a comprehensive list with tips for US citizens living abroad. The list directs you to the offices you should contact and notify about your move to New Zealand.

They also recommend that you sign up to the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program . Doing this will make your whereabouts known, in the event of an emergency.

Another service you should take advantage of is the expatriate mail service . In case you forgot to notify everyone about your move to New Zealand, you can still read your USA personal mail in New Zealand. This way you will not miss any important mail.
