What is a Dual Intent when applying for a visa to Canada?

by Mani
(Pakistan)

Hi Sharon

I am Mani from Pakistan.

I am going to apply for a study permit to Canada.

I read a paragraph of dual intent on the CIC website.

What is dual intent, and what is the purpose of dual inetent?

If I apply for a Canadian study permit can I use the option of dual intent and how can I use this?

I shall be very thankfull to you for your kind information.

Thanks, Mani

What is a Dual Intent when applying for a visa to Canada?
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Mani

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

A dual intent is when an international student has one intention to apply for a study permit to Canada (as a temporary resident) and a second intention to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

According to CIC having both intents - one for temporary residence through the study permit, and one for permanent residency is legitimate.

The dual intent serves Canada?s policy in ?attracting more international students to Canada and ultimately tapping into this source for highly educated workers to contribute to Canada?s labour force and to create ?the best-educated, most skilled and most flexible workforce in the world?.

When you apply for a Canadian study permit and during the application process, you may indicate your desire to remain in Canada after the completion of your studies.

However, you should convince the visa officer that although you have a dual intent, and are planning on applying for a permanent residency to Canada after graduation, you still intend to respect the requirement of a study permit holder and leave Canada by the end of the period authorized for your stay on your Canadian student visa.

Click on the following link for more information about dual intent.

Best of Luck
Sharon
