In which city are you living?

I live in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

What is the spoken language, and how much local language do you need to know for daily living?

Dutch is the native language, although English is also widely spoken. It is because of this reason, that there is no problem for an expat to carry out daily activities. Knowledge of Dutch is important though for better integration into the Dutch society.

How is the weather?

In summers, the days are long, and sunny. It gets pleasant in spring with the lovely flower bulbs all over the place. The winters are cold, dark with short days. It rains almost all through the year making an umbrella a useful addition to the purse.

Is this a good city for families/singles/couples?

The city welcomes people of all ages and acts as the perfect host. It is in fact one of the best cities in the Netherlands with respect to the living conditions, safety, recreation, studies etc.

How are the preschool and daycares?

Many of my expat friends have their kids going to preschools which offer excellent facilities.

Are their international schools/American Schools?

Rotterdam is a hub for international people, next only to Amsterdam. There are a number of International schools throughout the city and a few American ones too.

Any after school activities?

The kids can get busy with painting, sports, dancing, reading etc. There is a lot to be done, and the Internet offers a great aid for finding out the activity best suited.

Are there English speaking universities? Or any special programs in the English language at a local university?

Rotterdam School of Management is the one of the biggest universities in Europe. The Erasmus University offers quality education in varied fields and attracts students from all over the world.

How is the accommodation?

Accommodation is a tad bit expensive. One has to check out thoroughly for fairly priced apartments. Whether you are renting or buying a flat, be aware that prices fluctuate with the location and facilities.

How is the healthcare?

The Dutch system of healthcare is excellent. You have a Huisart (GP) who takes care of your health and refers you to specialists in case the need arises.

Is it a pet friendly city?

Very much. I do not have any pet myself but have seen enough on this front to form a good opinion.

Is household help easy to find?

Again, I do not have any personal experience on this though I have noticed that mostly the house help gets referred to by friends, neighbors or associates.

How is the traffic and the public transportation (buses, trains, taxis)?

The city is well connected by trams, metro and buses. They form the lifeline of the city though now with the OV-chipkaart being made compulsory as the mode of payment, the public transport has become expensive than before.

How is the communication - Cell/land phone, T.V/Cable/Satelite, Internet connection, international calls?

The communication system is competent. You have excellent high speed Internet connection, and
satellite, TV, mobile etc do not offer any problems.

What is the dress code to work and in public?

It is generally business formals, with jeans very well a part of the office culture nowadays.

How is shopping for groceries, household items and clothing?

There are a host of supermarkets, shopping arcades and open markets to choose from. A number of international shops offer expats the taste and choice of their home country.

Tell us about sport, entertainment, night life, restaurants.

The city has sports complex, clubs, associations, gyms, restaurants, parks, and cafes - lots to do on a week end. Feyenoord stadium is a household
name here.

How is the expats community?

The city has a vibrant expat population and meet ups are organised frequently by expat associations. You can find people from almost all the corners of the world. It offers amazing opportunities to know different cultures and lifestyles.
