Studying in Canada and Bringing My Family With Me

by Yel
(Graz, Austria)

Hi Sharon!

If ever I am a student in Canada, can I bring my family along while I am studying there?

Can my husband work and can my son enroll in a public school??

Hope you can help me with these questions!

Thank you so much!
Yel

Studying in Canada and Bringing your Family to Canada
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Yel

Thanks for your inquiry. Your questions are very important and should be checked by anyone who is looking into the possibilities of studying in Canada

I am not an immigration officer but I looked into your questions and found the following:

According to citizenship and immigration Canada your dependent family may accompany you to Canada or may join you at a later date.

When applying for your Canadian student visa make sure to include all your family members on your application. Please note that you may be required to provide a marriage certificate and birth certificates. All certificates must be translated to English and Notarized by your Embassy.

More information about this subject can be found here

Your husband may apply for a work permit in Canada if you are a full-time student, and you have a valid study permit or you have a valid work permit. Your Husband's work permit will be valid for the same period of time as your study or work permit.

Even better - Your husband will be eligible for an open work permit, which means he does not need a job offer or a labour market opinion from Service Canada.

More information about this subject can be found here

As for your son eligibility to enroll in a Canadian public school - Your accompanying child may be able to study in Canada. He must apply for a study permit at the same time as your application. If he intends to join you later he must obtain a study permit before coming to Canada to join you.

Important Tip: You and your family might not be eligible for health care in Canada, therefore make sure to consult your university and/or to research international health insurance possibilities.

You can start by consulting the following expatriates health insurance companies:

Global Medical Insurance.

MultiNational Underwriters .
