Study Permit to Canada for Short Term Courses

by Wheil Elnuweisri
(Libya)

Hi Sharon

My sister is planing to take English courses in Canada for 3 to 4 months period.and then join one of the collages in Halifax for 1 year diploma program. i have 2 questions here:

1) should she apply for a study permit for both courses, should she has acceptance letter from both now to apply?

2) she is traveling with her son, 6 years old, can he join public school in Canada? should he get any type of acceptance letter from any kind of schools in Canada before travel and how to do that. and the last thing should he apply at the same time as his mom since they are traveling together?

I am really thankfull for the information and the effort.

Study Permit to Canada for Short Term Courses
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Wheil

Thanks for your inquiry. Please note that I am not an immigration officer

  1. According to Canada citizenship and immigration you do not need a study permit if you plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less.

However, even if you do not need a study permit, it is a good idea to apply for a permit before you come to Canada. If you decide that you want to continue your studies in another program after you complete your short-term course or program, you must apply through a Canadian visa office outside Canada for a study permit if you do not already have one.

Instructions how Libyan citizens should apply for a study permit to Canada can be found in here.

Please note that because your sister is from Libya, a country whose citizens need a temporary resident visa to enter Canada, she and her son must also apply for a temporary resident visa at the Canadian visa office. More details can be found in here

  2. According to citizenship and immigration Canada In some cases, minor children do not need a study permit to study in Canada. These cases include minor children who are already in Canada with parents who are allowed to work or study in Canada, and who want to attend pre-school, primary or secondary school.

I would suggest that your sister contact the ministry of Education of the province where she will be living and check with them the requirements for school acceptance.

Best of Luck
Sharon
