study permit application to canada

by Sunita
(Glasgow)

Hi There

I have been reading your blog and it has been quite useful. Thank you for that.

I am on a dependent visa of my husband here in UK since Nov. 2010. My citizenship is of Nepal.

I got an offer from Canadian University to peruse my Masters degree. I have got stipend from prof. as Research Assistant plus scholarship of half tuition fee from Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Now I would be very grateful if I get clear about some of questions.

1) As I am in dependent visa will I be able to apply from UK or I will have to go to Nepal form my visa and study permit application?

2) How much fund will I have to show as I have got the funding of around 19000 CAD in total....where my fee is 8000 CAD. If I have to show fund for how many month will I have to show it.

3) Do I need health and police check certificate at time of application?

4) If my husband will apply as dependent together is it compulsion for him to go with me Canada at the time I leave the country or he can come and join me later. If he can come and join me later what will be the time period he can join me after he gets dependent visa.

Many Thanks for your suggestion.

Sunita

study permit application to canada

Dear Sunita

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer.

1. According to the Canadian Student Visa Guide ? "If you are not a citizen of the country from which you are applying, you must provide proof of your present immigrant status in the country of application. "

2. Re amount of funds ? according to Canada High Commission in India (which is also responsible for Nepal)- "you will require approximately $10,000 Canadian per year, not including tuition fees, to cover your living expenses. If your dependants are planning to accompany or join you, you will require an additional $4,000 for the first dependant, and $3,000 for each subsequent dependant, in addition to return airfare."

Evidence of Funds - According to the Canadian Student Visa Guide, "you should show evidence that you can support yourself as well as accompanying family members while studying in Canada.

Such evidence may include:

* proof of a Canadian bank account, if money has been transferred there,
* Bank statements for the past four months,
* proof of payment of tuition and residence fees, and
* proof of funding paid from within Canada for students with a scholarship or enrolled in a Canadian-funded educational program.

If foreign exchange control measures exist in your country, you must provide proof that you will be permitted by the exchange control authorities of your country to export funds for all your expenses.

3. Re Health check - You and your spouse may be required to undergo a medical examination in order to come to Canada.

If you do need a medical examination, your visa office will provide you with instructions and a form with your assigned file number before you see a designated medical practitioner. You are not required to have a medical examination before you submit your application forms.

More information about the medical check can be found in here.

Re Police check - You might be asked to provide a Police Clearance Certificate after you submit your application for a Canadian study permit

4. Re your Husband accompanying you to Canada - If your spouse?s application is approved, a temporary resident visa (TRV) will be issued in his passport. The expiry date on his visa will indicate the date by which he must enter Canada. He must enter Canada before his TRV expires. The TRV will also indicate if he can enter Canada only once (a single-entry visa) or if he can enter Canada multiple times (a multiple-entry visa).

For accurate information it is best to consult the visa section of the Canadian Embassy.

Best of Luck
Sharon
