Study in Ontario, Canada with Spouse and Child

by Ali Haider
(Banglandesh)

Hi Sharon,

This is a real help for everyone interested in canada and we are thankful to you.

My child is 3 years old and by the time I complete my studies of 2 yrs and job experience of 1 year to qualify for cec and apply for PR he will be 6.5 years old

I have few questions:

1. What is the minimum minor age of a child considered in the schools at Ontario, Canada?

2. I read on the CIC website that my wife will can get an open work permit but it will be only for the period of mt study permit. For example if I have a study permit of 2 years she will also get the work permit for 2 years. My question is what happens after I graduate and I start working in Ontario, Canada. Will my wife's work permit also get renewed or not?

3. Till what age and class child's education is free in Ontario, Canada?

4. Another thing I want to know is if I go to Canada on a study permit and my wife and child accompanies me to Ontario Canada, will my child's education be free if I am on a study permit and my spouse gets a work permit when she arrives in Ontario, Canada?

Thanks,
Ali Haider

Dear Ali

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

  1. Recently the province of Ontario started expanding the full-day kindergarten program (for 4 and 5 years old) in Ontario with a goal of having it available in all publicly funded elementary schools by 2015-16.

More information about this program can be found in this link.

  2. According to Canada Citizenship and Immigration if your spouse wishes to remain longer, study or work in Canada she must apply for permission to do so.

If you all apply at the same time for an extension, she will not have to submit separate application form.

More information can be found at the Application to change conditions or extend your stay in Canada - Students

  3. In Ontario Canada Children can attend a publicly funded school without the payment of fees for learning materials, supplies, activities or textbooks until they graduate high school

  4. I believe that if your child receive authorization to study in Canada and you choose to enroll him in a public funded school then you will not need to pay education fee.

However, I would suggest that you verify this with the school boards in Ontario , and please come back and let us know what you have found.

  5. Best of Luck
    Sharon
