Hi Sharon

My boyfriend is coming to Canada in January from the UK. He intends on going to college in September, but would like to work from January until then (and during the course if possible).

Should he apply for a work visa, then is he able to switch to a student visa once he gets accepted into the Fall 2012 program?

Thanks for your inquiry (Please note that I am not an immigration officer).

Canada and U.K has a special program called IEC - International Experience Canada - Work and Travel in Canada.

This program enables citizens of the United Kingdom between the ages of 18 and 30 to stay in Canada for up to one year, legally work in Canada and experience another culture.

Information regarding the opening of the 2012 International Experience Canada initiative will be posted in here in the fall.

As regards to switching his working-holiday visa to a student visa - According to the FAQ section of the international Experience Canada he should call 1-888-242-2100 (in Canada) to check the requirements for changing the conditions of his permit or extending his stay in Canada.
