Hello,

I am permanent resident of Canada since March 2008 and had been living and working in Pakistan.

Now I have moved to Canada with all my earnings and intend to settle down there permanently.

I want to sponsor my spouse as soon as possible to whom I got married in 2009. I’m currently unemployed.

Do I need to file my tax returns and also pay the taxes before submitting the sponsorship application? How long will it take?

In order to respond your inquiry I have consulted Wayne Bewick from Global Tax Network Ltd. who has provided the following information:

?This is more of an immigration issue as it relates a requirement for sponsoring a spouse so in regards to that I'm not sure if a tax return needs to be filed in order to sponsor someone. However, I believe a tax return would need to be filed as I imagine one of the requirements would be that a person sponsoring someone would need to up to date on their tax filings?.
