Renewal of a Canadian Permanent Resident Card

by Nosheen Shahid
(Toronto, Canada)

Hi Sharon

I became an immigrant to Canada in August 2005.

I came to Canada and spend only 2 months and then went back home.

I decided to come back to Canada in November 2009 and from that date I am continuously residing in Canada.

My Permanent Resident Card expired on 13 of September 2010.

I applied for renewal of my PR card in June 2010 and since then I am still waiting for the renewal.

My husband is living in Nairobi, Kenya and I want to go and visit him for few months.

I gave my humanitarian grounds of not staying in Canada for so long. My case is still in process.

I want to know the reason for the delay in renewal as I know that a person might lose his residency if he doesn’t stay in Canada for 2 years. I shall be completing my 2 years in December 2011.

Should I expect my renewal card after I complete my 2 years here in Canada or should I expect that I have lost my residency here and if I leave country even after 2 years of staying here I won’t be getting my PR card.

Kindly guide me on this issue

Nosheen Shahid

Renewal of a Canadian Permanent Resident Card
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Nosheen Shahid

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I man not an immigration officer)

In the following link you can find out how long is the processing time for renewal of a Canadian PR card.

According to the current processing time the renewal of your Canadian pr card is taking longer than the processing time that is published.

Therefore you may contact the call centre services to find out the status of your application.

You might also want to consider the possibility to apply for an urgent Canadian PR card based on your travel plans.

Best of Luck
Sharon
