Price of private schools in Madeira, Portugal

by Paula
(Lisbon)

Hi Sharon

We might move to Madeira with our 2 children and I´m wondering what schools are like for a 9 and an 11 year old.

They could go to Portuguese school since I am Portuguese and they speak a tiny bit of Portuguese, but they were born in the US and have lived there all of their lives. But they would probably go to an international school.

What are the average prices for those schools? Just a ballpark figure so that we figure out what our expenses would be...

thanks a lot, Paula in Lisbon.

Price of private schools in Madeira, Portugal

Hi Paula

I have forwarded your question to Louise Wiles an Expatriate Coach from Success Coach Abroad who has lived in Madeira for 5 years, and was kind to answer your question

"Yes there is an international school - The British School. The website is http://www.britishschoolmadeira.com. They take children from three into the nursery up to age 15 at the moment. They are extending the years they cover in the secondary school as the current pupils grow up through the school. They used to only go to age 11.

There is a good mix of Portuguese and international pupils. However some Portuguese children leave at age 10 and transfer into the Portuguese system and so class sizes go down in the higher years. This is obviously a positive thing in some ways - more personal attention, but possibly a bit restricting from a social perspective. The school teaches both English and Portuguese and so children are generally fluent in both.

Generally I have heard good things about the school, although my children did not go to the school. They went to another international school, Escola Internacional, but this school only takes children up until Primary 4.

Fees - I believe that they are around 400 - 500 euros per month but that should be checked with the school.

If you would like to speak to any current parents then I would be happy to put you in touch with them, contact me via email - Louise@Successabroadcoaching.com

If you would like any more information about Madeira then I would be happy to provide it, I lived there for five years leaving only this August to live in Lisbon.

Wishing you all the best."
