Hi Sharon

I am Maneesh from chennai.

My wife got a canadian student visa from the province of Alberta. Her course will commence at the end of august. But the problem is now we know she is about about one month pregnant.

She has to fly to Canada next week.

we have got some information about cost of consultation of doctors and medical treatment.

I think its very difficult to handle all costs relating to this.

If you can please give some suggtions about this. and maybe you can provide some more information about different types of insurance plans to meet all costs relating to her pregnency.

As to your health insurance possibilities in Alberta, you can check the following 2 options:

First Option

AHCIP - Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan

According to the government of Alberta:

"Alberta Health and Wellness may provide AHCIP coverage to those in Alberta on permits or records from Citizenship and Immigration, depending on the length of time on the permit, if there are any restrictions, and if the permit is current.

Eligibility will be determined by a registration agent upon receipt of the application and all required documents.

You should include one of the following documents from Citizenship and Immigration Canada with their application for AHCIP coverage:

1. A confirmation of permanent residence

2. A permanent resident card

3. An active work, study, or visitor permit for Alberta.

4. Or a designation as a Convention Refugee with accompanying documentation

Second Option

A health Insurance for international student at your spouse University. Most universities in Alberta offer health insurance plans for international students.

Go into the website of your spouse's university in Alberta and search for medical insurance for international students.

We are trying to get an AHCIP insurance coverage. And also we got a confirmation form the college that they are providing international students insurance coverage for all their students.

May I please ask to give one more information for us. Now she is planing to attend the CRNE examination in next year. If she clear CRNE exam in next year, can we apply for a work permit as a RN with changing the visa status from student.

We are expecting a valuable information from you.

Great to hear that you have health insurance coverage for international student at your spouse's university and I hope that you are able to get into the UCHIP insurance coverage.

As regards to changing a Canadian student visa to a Canadian work visa - Canada offers the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.

According to this option - "If you want to work in Canada after you graduate from your studies, you must apply for a work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program."

Ok. now I understand that we can apply for a work permit after completion of the course.

Please allow me ask one more doubt. My spouse has a nursing diploma from india and also has six years of nursing experience including 2.5 years of international experience.

If she clear CRNE and if she get a licence as a registered nurse before completing the current program, can she cancel the student visa and apply for a work permit as an RN

In General your spouse can apply for a work visa from inside Canada. She will need to use the application to change conditions or extend your stay in Canada as a worker

As your spouse is a registered nurse you must make sure that her credentials are recognized in Canada.

I wuld also suggest that you read the information about work in Canada that is published on the CIC website.

Hi Chennai,

Is your wife in canada right now? My wife and I will be new graduate students in canada this fall 2012. We just learned that she is 1-month pregnant. Do yu think she will be allowed to enroll for fall semester and then have a leave by winter sem? Did the university health insurance cover for the delivery hospital fee of your wife? How much did it cost?
