Overseas Nurse in Australia, Securing a Job

by Maria
(Kenya)

Hi Sharon

I am a registered nurse currently working in one of the best hospital in my country Kenya.

I am looking for an agency that can assist me in securing a job in Australia.

I have done and passed all the USA nursing entry requirements tests and only waiting for the retrogression to be lifted that is why am considering working in Australia.

Thanks for your assistance
Maria

Overseas Nurse in Australia, Securing a Job
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Maria

Thanks for your inquiry

I would like to emphasize that I am not an immigration officer.

I would recommend reading the ebook Nursing in Australia-A Guide to Working & Living as a Nurse Down Under - A step-by-step guide to getting a visa, job and registration & relocating and settling in Australia.

Other than that - I did some searching and found the following information:

Every country has its own skilled worker requirements. Therefore I would suggest that you check if the USA nursing requirements are the same as the Australian nursing requirements.

Other than that As from 1 July 2009 overseas trained nurses applying for registration in all States and Territories of Australia are required to undertake an English language test.

The test are called - International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Occupational English Test (OET)

You can find hereunder a link to a study guide for the IETLS test study guide. This excellent guide will teach you step by step how to pass successfully the IELTS test.

I would also recommend to gather some more information about nursing in Australia at Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Incorporated (ANMC) which can be found in here.

You will need to apply for a visa to Australia. In general the following visas are available for nurses:

1. Working Holiday Visa?s (417 & 462) - This is for nurses from eligible countries, who are 18 to 30 years of age and are interested in a working holiday of up to 12 months in Australia.

2. Temporary Business Visas (457) ? This is for registered nurses who would like to work in Australia for an approved business sponsor, for up to four years.

3. Employer Nominated Sponsorship (121 & 856). This covers overseas nurses up to 50 years of age with qualifications and work experience as a registered nurse who may be eligible for a permanent visa under this scheme.

Best of Luck
Sharon
