Moving to the U.S with Twin Toddlers

Hi

I have twin boys(7.5 y/o) who were born in the US have moved back to eastern Europe with us a month later.

One of the boys had to have some surgeries during infancy which led the other somewhat overlooked by his mother. He is attached to me as his father from infancy.

Problem grew between him and his mother. Now he just started 2 year of primary school, but forced all the time by mom for eating, sleeping, going to school, etc(in fact in all areas of his life) plus being devoid of mom's feminine warmness now makes him upset, worried, sometimes nervous and aggressive(throwing toys, hitting people at home and mostly closer-to-mom twin brother).

I'm planning to move to a small town in the US but very worried whether my boys especially the neglected one will take this another sort of great stress.

He started to reject the idea with the reason that "he won't know English and will not understand the language".

I know that US is not Europe and probably there won't be a good social support as well as professional help available right away. Most improtantly I'll work for long hours and my kids will have to stay with their mom at home.

Can I expect an understanding and professional team support from US school system? If not, our family environment is already a hell and I'm worried that one of my twins might be sufeering from RAD (reac.attach.disrd) and is already having problems with going to school here.

Thank you very much,

Moving to the U.S with Twin Toddlers

Hi

Thanks for your inquiry (Please note that I am not a psychologist)

Moving overseas with kids (even with ones that do not have special needs) is challenging and it is great that you are taking the time to think about it thoroughly before relocating to the U.S.A

You can start by reading the following articles : How to prepare for overseas relocation with kids? and the interview with Rebecca Grappo, M.Ed. an International Educational Consultant about special educational resources for kids with special needs.

Another thing you should check is ? Your international healthcare plan. Healthcare in the U.S.A is quite expensive. It is therefore important that you and your family will have a full healthcare coverage including all necessary treatments for your child that has special needs.

It is also a good idea to contact the school in the U.S.A, where your boys will be enrolled, and to check with them what kind of special need support they offer inside the school, and if there are any special need support facilities in the local community.

Best of Luck
Sharon
