Moving to Negril, Jamaica

by Scott
(U.S.A )

Hi Sharon

When I retire I would like to move to Negril, Jamaica and spend the rest of my days just being a beach bum.

I have a friend there that would let me build a room in her house.

How would I go about getting this started?

I would like to remain a US citizen but to live in Jamaica

Thanks Scott

Moving to Negril, Jamaica

Hi Scott

Thanks for your inquiry (Please note that I am not an immigration officer)

Retiring in Jamaica is possible but quite complicated. According to the Consulate of Jamaica in New York the first step in obtaining Permanent Visa status for Jamaica is to establish residency either through Visa/Work Permit Application or Registration.

To reside in Jamaica you should submit the following documents and particulars:

  1. Valid National Passport.

  2. Evidence of financial status and means of support - e.g. particulars of pension, bank account, property owned and business investments.

  3. Certified Copy of Birth Certificate

  4. Marital status - Marriage Certificate, particulars of spouse, children and other dependents.

  5. Medical Certificate of good health.

  6. Police Certificate from the state from which you are migrating.

  7. Two Passport size photographs.

  8. Reasons for seeking permanent residence in Jamaica.

  9. Names and addresses of two reputable references or acquaintances.

All applications are referred to Jamaica for approval which can take up to 3 - 4 months.

For further information I would suggest that you contact The Jamaican Consulate in New York, U.S.A

Please take into account that as a U.S.A citizen living in Jamaica you would still need to submit a U.S tax return each year, because if you move back to the US the IRS will question the years you did not file your tax return.

This can turn into a huge headache which can be avoided by consulting a US expats tax expert like ExpatCFO.com who will provide you with comprehensive solutions to help you reduce taxes, and to organize and focus your entire financial world.

Best of Luck
Sharon
