Medicare Australia cover when visiting Japan by an Australian resident

by Maximo Arnaldo Buch
(West Pennant Hills, NSW, Austtralia)

Dear Sharon

I am an Australian resident that wants to visit Japan for a few weeks.

Does Medicare Australia cover me for medical expenses, possibly under a reciprocal arrangement with the Japanese health serrvice?

Thanks
Maximo

Medicare Australia cover when visiting Japan by an Australian resident
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Maximo Arnaldo Buch

Thanks for your inquiry.

According to the Australian Embassy in Tokyo All Australians travelling overseas are strongly advised to take out travel insurance with a health care component. Medicare does not cover any costs incurred outside Australia.

The Australian department of foreign affairs and trade has published an article explaining why all Australians should take out travel insurance before traveling overseas.

Best of Luck
Sharon
