Madeira's most famous product is Madeira wine which has a taste somewhere between that of sherry and port.

Madeira island enjoys an abundance of fish of various kinds. The species that are consumed the most are Black scabbardfish, Blue Fin Tuna, White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Albacore, Big Eye Tuna, Wahoo, Spearfish, skipjack tuna and many others. A national Madeira dish made out of fish is the Espada (Black scabbardfish) which is often served with banana.

There are also many meat dishes on Madeira, one of the most popular being Espetada which is a typical Portuguese dish made of large chunks of beef rubbed in garlic and salt, skewered onto a bay leaf stick with vegetables such as onions and bell peppers and left to grill over smouldering wood chips

As for pastry one of the most popular pastries is called Bolo de mel, which translates as (Sugarcane) "Honey Cake" a rich, heavy fruit cake which is very tasty, but extremely sweet, and according to custom is never cut with a knife but broken into pieces by hand
