IELTS on an Australian Working Holiday Visa.

Hi Sharon

I am a qualified nurse, looking to go to Australia for a year in 2012 on a Working Holiday Visa.

I plan to work as a nurse whilst I am over there. As I am only going on a working holiday visa, do I need to take the IELTS exams.

I am a British Citizen born and bred!

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

According to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

If an applicant is able to provide sufficient evidence that they have completed:

* their secondary education taught and assessed in English to the requisite level required for entry into a nursing or midwifery program AND

* a nursing or midwifery program taught and assessed in English

then the applicant is not required to undertake a test of English language proficiency for registration purposes.

However on application for registration, applicants are required to provide documentary evidence of their completed secondary education as well as the completed nursing or midwifery program. Evidence that both were taught and assessed in English is also required as well as evidence of the requisite level required for entry into the nursing or midwifery program.

Please note that according to the Australian department of citizenship and immigration

"If you intend to work in your occupation in Australia, you should be aware that registration or licensing may be required. This applies particularly to the health professions and the construction sector. You should contact the relevant assessing body to ascertain if you need to obtain registration or licensing in Australia."

It is therefore recommended that you contact the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for further information.
