I am extremely late in submitting my Canadian Study Permit application

by Mary
(Seattle)

can I start the program while still awaiting approval for my Study permit in Canada?

From what I understand, US citizens can be in Canada for up to 180 days without a visa. I have been accepted to a Masters program at Simon Fraser University, but I didn't realize there was a 6 week processing time for the Study permit. (It was my husband's fault - he thought we could apply at the border, but he was flat wrong! (I think?)

My program starts on Tuesday - is there any way I can start attending classes even though my study permit application has not been processed?

I am hoping I can start the program and then receive the study permit 5 or 6 weeks into the program.

OR perhaps there is a service that can expedite the processing of my application.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mary, Very late in Seattle

Dear Mary

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

Your husband was not totally wrong. According to the Consulate of Canada in Seattle . "American citizens studying in Canada can apply for their visa at the Point of Entry, located at major airports and border points where people entering Canada must report. If you are applying for a Study Permit, ensure you have all the documentation required."

However, it still takes time to process your Canadian study permit....

You do not require a study permit to Canada only in the following cases:

  1. If you plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less.

  2. If you are a family member or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada accredited by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, you may not need a permit to study in Canada.

  3. If you are a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act, you do not need a permit to study in Canada.

I would therefore check with the Canadian immigration or with the University if you can only come and listen to the classes until your study visa is finalized.

Please come back and let us know how you managed

Best of Luck
Sharon
