Health Care Insurance in Canada for Expats

Hi Sharon

My wife and I, (both US Citizens), are 66 years old, retired and in good health. If we were to move to live full time in Canada, (British Columbia), can we be covered for any Health Care Services provided by the Canadian Health Care System?

I believe that under any scenario, we will have to purchase private Health Care Insurance, either supplemental or for full coverage. In either case, what range of cost per month fthat we may expect to pay?

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer).

All Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for health insurance in Canada

In the following link you can find Information about the Canadian Public Health Insurance, when to apply, what services you will receive and the waiting period can be found.

Specific information about British Colombia Medical Service plan and who is eligible to enroll can be found in here.

You would probably need to purchase a private health insurance for the waiting time and a supplemental health insurance for services that are not covered by the public health insurance.

I do not have information about the cost per month but I suggest that you check out a few companies and compare their prices and services.
