Gestures and Body Language of Bosnian people

by Patti
(Cumming, Georgia)

How do you indicate "come here" and "me" in Bosnian?

How close do people typically stand from one another when conversing and is it custom to look in eyes or not?

What gestures or body language are obscene or taboo for the Bosnian people?

Thanks Patti

Gestures and Body Language of Bosnian people
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Patti

Thanks for your inquiry.

Here is some information about gestures and body language of the Bosnian people:

Touching is very uncommon when meeting someone for the first time. However, shaking hands with both men and women when greeting the person is customary.

Men generally do not touch other men unless they know each other very well, or are relatives.

Friends are more likely to hug each other and kiss each other on the cheek. When it comes to men touching women, a certain level of distance should be kept in the beginning.

Eye contact is important and implies honesty and good intentions. Facial expressions are very important and it is customary to have friendly face all the time.

"First three fingers erect" should be avoided at all times. Also the middle finger erect, waiving a pointed index finger and pointing at someone is considered as extremely rude and irresponsible.

More information about culture and non verbal communication in Bosnia can be found in the book Bosnia & Herzegovina - Culture Smart: the essential guide to customs & culture (Culture Smart!)

The book provides essential information on attitudes, beliefs and behavior in Bosnia. It will tell you what to expect, how to behave, and will enable you to feel confident in unfamiliar situations, and develop trust, friendships, and successful business relationships.

As regards to your other inquiry - How do you indicate "come here" and "me" in Bosnian?

The word doci means to come, and mene is me.
