Expats Sharing International Recipes for Everyday Food

One of the great challenges one can encounter when relocating overseas is adjusting to the local everyday food, without gaining weight, or jeopardizing your health.

Maintaining a healthy food diet is hard even for someone who is not relocating abroad, so imagine how difficult it can be when living and working overseas.

Why is it so difficult?

There are several reasons:

  • Eating habits are being interrupted - You are so busy adjusting to the new country, and there is no time left for cooking healthy food recipes, or for following any diet food plan. You just grab something to eat and then keep running.
  • Urge for comfort foods – Homesick feelings might drive you to emotional eating, and to consuming large quantities of food (usually comfort or junk foods) in response to feelings instead of hunger. What a "sweet way" to gain weight ?
  • Adjusting to the local food - Not only do you need to learn about the different types of food but the local food might affect your metabolism. For some of you that might results in gaining weight.
I find the last point to be the most challenging one – After the first few months of settling in your new country the urge for comfort food will decrease, and you will create a new eating routine. But adjusting to the everyday food in your destination country, and maintaining a good metabolism might be more difficult.

Did you feel the same? Would you like to share with us tips and stories about adjusting to the local food in a new country?

How to Watch your Weight When Living Overseas?

Use a food diary to write down everything you eat and drink over the day. A food diary can help you become more aware of your eating and activities habits, and give you a basis from which to plan changes and set goals.

Use a food calorie counter to count your daily caloric intake, and to keep track of the number of calories you eat.

Eat negative calories foods that are known to increase metabolism, like - green tea, green vegetables, orange, onion, lemon, mango, etc'.
