Essence of Maternity
To Serve Mother’s Nature, To Serve You.

by Claudia de Kruijff-Gan

Every woman possesses the strength, power and love to be a caring mom for her child(ren). As a mother or mother to be, we are responsible for creating a safe, secure and loving environment whatever the circumstances are. Without any doubt, being a parent is a wonderful but also challenging and adventurous experience, which starts from the moment you and your partner have decided to raise a family. Having children effects your lifestyle on every level : physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Being a mother myself with an Asian cultural background, born in Germany and raised in the Netherlands, I have seen and learnt that having a multicultural lifestyle, like expats have, it is most important to build a home base that is unique and identifiable to you and your loved ones.
The local authorities and customs can be adopted, but how can you settle in a foreign country and still feeling home?

MOM’s BASICS FOR LIVING ABROAD
Scents | Tea |Easy Listening | Colors | The sense of touch

For the health and well being of your (unborn) child(ren), the first priority should be taking good care of yourself. Most women attend to forget pampering themselves or take some time off to reflect or just relax. I am sure there are many things on the to-do list, but why not adding another item on the list and start taking a moment for yourself?

Picture a moment that the aroma burner is filled with your favorite essential oil. You are having a nice cup of herbal tea with a cd of your favorite music on the background. This might take 5-10 minutes of the day, but as simple as this might sound, it is an effective and powerful way to create your own comfort zone wherever you are. The next step could be painting in all favorite colors while expressing your feelings in a creative way. Another option is gardening or filling your house with wonderful flowers to brighten the place. By stimulating and using all senses we are able to reproduce an environment that leads us to our fine memories. Last but not least, it is recommendable to have massages as often as you can for inducing peace, growth and bonding.

PREGNANCY & LABOR

Pregnancy is just the right time to pamper your senses and to prepare for the joys of motherhood. For many women, several minor problems like morning sickness, indigestion, fatigue, edema, insomnia and cramps can mar this feeling of happiness.

Essential oils when used individually or in combination may help alleviate or minimize these symptoms. Moreover, since a woman’s sense of smell is enhanced multifold during pregnancy, it’s great to be surrounded by a pleasant smelling, healthy and relaxing atmosphere.

The following essential oils not only offer a refreshing environment but can also be very helpful in suppressing symptoms of stress and discomfort:

Spearmint oil is a good nerve tonic that helps fight off mental fatigue and nervous stress.

Grapefruit oil is a natural anti-depressant as it uplifts and refreshes the mood.

Ginger oil is a warming essential oil often used to treat digestive problems and stomach upsets of any kind. Its warming qualities neutralize feelings of loneliness and winter depression.

Lemon oil helps to eliminate emotional confusion and enhance one’s sense of humor and sense of well-being.

Aromatherapy can also be used during labor, because using essential oils can make the experience as pleasant and easy as possible for both the mother and the baby by creating a relaxing, comfortable and stress-free environment for labor.

Essential oils diffused in the delivery room will help cleanse the air and provide a familiar and welcoming scent for the baby.
