Do I need to legalize my kids School Certificates before moving to Canada?

by Clifton Gonzaga
(Oman)

Hi Sharon

I am from South India, coming in from Oman, the Middle East.

We're already permanent residents of Canada, but just about to make our Canadian stay permanent from June 29, 2010.

I just wanted to know if it is mandatory to have our two son's School Transfer Certificates attested/legalized by the Embassy of India, Oman.

They have finished Grade 7 & 1 respectively and have been studying in a school here whose curriculum is controlled by the Government of India.

Your feedback will be of immense help.

Kind regards
Clifton Gonzaga

Do I need to legalize my kids School Certificates before moving to Canada?

Hi Clifton

Thanks for your mail (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

According to Canada citizenship and Immigration - Parents must register children for school. This can be done at the local school or school board office.

When you register your child, you must bring the following documentation:

  1. Permanent Resident Card or Confirmation of Permanent Residence.

  2. Your child's birth certificate.

  3. Your child?s vaccination certificate.

In addition you should bring records from your child's previous school. If the originals of the documents are in languages other than English or French, you should have them translated into English or French.

Usually translation of documents should be legalized and notarized by the Embassy.

Best of Luck
Sharon
