Cold Canadian Winters

by Dave

Hello Everyone

I have just recieved great news regarding a job in ottawa, which means My family and I can come and enjoy hopefully a wonderfull life there.

The only thing that worries me, and I know this sounds really stupid is the driving conditions in winter, are the roads well prepared, or is it that you take your life into your own hands 4 months of the year??

Sorry if it seems silly, but hey if I don't ask I will never know

Many Thanks
Dave

Cold Canadian Winters
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hello Dave and Welcome

Congratulations on your new job and I wish you happy life in Ottawa, Canada

My family and I lived in Ottawa from 2002 to 2006. We had a wonderful time there. Ottawa is so beautiful, and a great place to raise a family.

As for the winters ?Well, they are cold. Sometimes it gets to -40 Celsius with wind-chill. The snow can be quite heavy and 20 cm of snow is not a rare phenomenon.

However, the Canadians are so organized and well prepared for the winter. The snow blowers are working around the clock, roads get clean pretty fast. Many people use four seasons tires for their cars and some change their tires in the winter.

Sometimes there is freezing rain which is quite dangerous so you must put antifreeze in the water of your car and pour rock salt on the driveway (after you shovel it).

In our 4 years in Ottawa school was never canceled because of the snow.

Anyway it a good idea to read some books about working and living in Canada before you arrive there

Best of Luck
Sharon
