Canadian Student Visa Requirement (Proof Of Funds) Query

by Haseeb Ilyas
(Karachi, Pakistan)

Hi Sharon

My name is Haseeb and I intend to study in Canada. I have applied to the Ryerson University Canada and hope fully will get the admission acceptance letter.

My next step is to apply for the Canadian Student Visa. But here I have a query regarding one of the visa requirements that is the "Proof of Funds". I would like to know about this requirement of Canadian Student Visa application - what are the ways to provide the proof of funding, as in my case my uncle (My Mother's Brother) is a Canadian citizen and he is going to sponsor me and I am going to live in his home in Canada.

As my Uncle is going to provide me the money in Canada for all my expenses including the tuition fees of University, please guide me which document can I provide to complete the requirement of "Proof of Funding".

Is it necessary to have a Bank account on my name having the required sufficient amount of funds? Or my Uncle can provide me the document to prove that he has the required sufficient amount of funds to sponsor me?

I am looking forward for your reply it will be grateful to you if you can help me out regarding my query.

Thanks Haseeb

Canadian Student Visa - Proof of Funds
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Haseeb

Thanks for your inquiry. Please note that I am not an immigration officer

Before you apply for a student visa to Canada you must have the letter of acceptance from Ryerson University Canada.

As regards to Proof of Funds - according to Citizenship and Immigration Canada you can prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself in Canada by showing some of the following:

  1. Proof of a Canadian bank account in your name if money has been transferred to Canada

  2. Your bank statements for the past four months.

  3. A bank draft in convertible currency.

  4. Proof of payment of tuition and accommodation fees.

  5. A letter from the person or institution providing you with money.

  6. Proof of funding paid from within Canada if you have a scholarship or are in a Canadian-funded educational program.

I guess your situation falls into number 5 - "A letter from the person or institution providing you with money".

Your uncle can write a letter for you. However I do recommend that you contact the Canadian Embassy in Karachi and ask them what other documents would your uncle need to provide them.

Please take into consideration that the Government of Canada does not pay for the medical costs of foreign students. You should contact the school to which you are applying to receive more information about medical coverage and health insurance.

You can also consult the following expatriates health insurance companies:

Medical Inquiry for Canadian Student Visa
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Saqib

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

According to the current (July 2011) application proceesing information, a student visa application from India should be processed in 4 weeks.

You have mentioned that it has been 2 months since you submitted your application, so in this case accordig to Canada Citizinship and Immigration:

"If it has been longer than the publishe processing time since you applied and your visa office has not contacted you, you may wish to contact the visa office that is processing your application by e-mail, letter or fax." to check the status of your application.

Best of Luck

Want to study in Canada
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Babar

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

You did not mention from which country you are, however according to CIC "you do not need a study permit if you plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less. You must complete the course or program within the period authorized for your stay in Canada."

But, If you are from a country that requires to apply for a temporary resident visa before entering Canada then you should make sure that you obtain a visitor visa to Canada before your Go there.

In the following link you can find an Application guide for a Canadian Temporary Resident Visa from outside Canada.

Please note that according to CIC "even if you do not need a study permit, it is a good idea to apply for a permit before you come to Canada. If you decide that you want to continue your studies in another program after you complete your short-term course or program, you must apply through a Canadian visa office outside Canada for a study permit if you do not already have one."

To apply for a study permit to Canada please follow the application guide for a study permit to Canada.

Best of Luck
Sharon
