Hi Sharon

I will be entering Canada on a visitor visa, and was wondering if I can change my visitor visa to a student visa while I am in Canada?

Thanks for your e-mail.

First I must emphasize that I am not an immigration officer.

However i did some research and found the following information:

You must apply for a study permit before coming to Canada. If you are visiting Canada and you want to apply to study, you must leave Canada and apply from your home country.

However, in some cases, studying without a permit is allowed:

  • If you plan to take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less.

  • If you are a family member or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada you may not need a permit to study in Canada.

  • If you are a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act, you do not need a permit to study in Canada.
