Canada Primary School Admission Guideline Request

Hi Sharon,

Greetings!

I am expected to travel soon from India to Kitchener, Ontario, Canada with my family (my wife and my 9+ years old son). I will be going with Work Permit visa and my family with Dependent visa.

My son is presently studying in an English medium co-ed school here in the 3rd standard and from April 2010 he is supposed to be in the 4th standard.

My questions are:

1. What documents do I need to carry to enroll my son in a school in Canada?
2. Which are the schools in Kitchener that I can try for the admission?
3. What's the approximate Fees structure?
4. Do I get any tax benefit for my investment in my son's education?
5. While my son does study in an English medium school here, will he face problem to understand the Canadian English accent and how to improve skills on that?

I may have asked you a lots of questions, but it would be really helpful if you can please provide your answers/suggestions on these.

Warm regards
Kaushik Dutta

Hi Kaushik Dutta

Thanks for your inquiry. Please find bellow some suggestions:

What documents I need to carry to enroll my son in a school in Canada?

  1. Passport

  2. Proof of immigration status

  3. Proof of immunization

  4. Proof of address (rental agreement, house deed or utility bill)

  5. Telephone number

  6. Most recent school documents

Which are the schools in Kitchener that I can try for the admission?

A list of all schools in the Waterloo Region District School Board (Kitchener belongs to the Waterloo region) can be found in here.

What's the approximate Fees structure?

In Ontario there are 4 publicly-funded school systems - English Public, English Catholic, French-language Public, French-language Catholic, private schools and home schooling.
More information about can be found in here

Do I get any tax benefit for my investment in my son's education?

I would recommend that you read the article "Relocating to Canada: Tax Issues to Consider" which was written by Mohammad (Mo) Ahmad a tax expert from www.trowbridge.ca

While my son does study in an English medium school here, will he face problem to understand the Canadian English accent and how to improve skills on that?

From my own experience the Canadian accent is very clear and easy to understand. Nonetheless there ESL programs for English language learners in English language elementary and secondary schools in Ontario, from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

More information can be found in here.

Good Luck
Sharon

Dear Sir or Madam

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

According to the information that I found at the education in Canada government website:

"Education in Canada is under the jurisdiction of the provinces, so you will need to contact the province where you plan to live.

The contact information for each province can be found on the website of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada.

If you know in which city/community you will live, you may also want to find the contact information for the school board there and contact them directly to find answers to your questions".

Best of Luck
Sharon
