Canada Immigration Sponsor for a Spouse
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Nahida

Thanks for your inquiry.

Let me start by emphasizing that I am not an immigration officer. You can find great information in My Immigration to Canada software (E-book Style) which is designed to guide you *step by step* towards successfully sponsoring your spouse and bringing him to Canada.

In regards to your specific inquiry - A Canadian citizen or permanent resident may sponsor her or his spouse, to come to Canada as permanent residents.

You will need to prove that your marriage is legally valid.

If you were married in Canada, you must have a marriage certificate issued by the province or territory where the marriage took place.

If you were married outside Canada you must show that

  • The marriage is valid under the law of the country where it took place and under Canadian law.

  • A marriage performed in an embassy or consulate must comply with the law of the country where it took place, not the country of nationality of the embassy or consulate.

Information about the full procedure and requirements can be found in here.

There are a few things you should be aware of:

When you sponsor a spouse you must promise to support them financially. Therefore, you have to meet certain income requirements.

To be a sponsor:

  • You and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits you to provide financial support for your relative, if necessary. This agreement also says the person becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support her or himself.

  • You must provide financial support for a spouse for three years from the date they become a permanent resident.

Sponsring a spouse - Time Limit ?
by: Anonymous

hi sharon,

I am canadian citizen who is about to get married, i was looking over the cic site and I came across the time table of statistics.

My question to u is, is there any way that this process can be done faster then 21 months + 38 days (in pakistan) that seems like a really long time.

If i fill out all the requirements, and attach the appropriate documents, can this process be done faster?

This is really stressful, any information that can help me will be very much appreciated in this matter.

Thank You.!

Canada Immigration Sponsor for a Spouse - Time Limit
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Sir/Madam

Thanks for your inquiry. (Please note that I am not an immigration officer).

According to Canada citizenship and Immigration - "CIC is committed to processing applications as quickly as possible.

They carefully monitor processing times and look for ways to reduce processing times, such as through regularly reassigning resources to the areas of greatest need.

They will continue to strive to decrease processing times."

In adition CIC states that - "Future processing times may not be the same as past processing times. The length of time it takes to finalize applications may vary from time to time.

The tables show the number of days or months that were required to approve or refuse applications at visa offices around the world during a 12-month period in the past."

However, I suggest that you check with the Canadian Embassy in Pakistan or with the Canadian immigration in Canada if your future spouse will be allowed to enter Canada on a temporary visa until the application process of her immigration will be finalized.

Majgan from Canada

Hi sharon. You have some excellent information and I really like this site.

I got married in Pakistan in Oct.2010, I started my husband's case A.S.A.P when I came back and By December 2010 his work from Canada was done in about 3 weeks, which Im grateful for. The Canadian Embassy in Paskistan has received my husbands case in January. So far we both have not yet been notified of anything. I called the Embassy twice and once the person i was talking to laughed and said wait 21 months like everyone else. So many of my husbands friends have left Pakistan in 5-8 months. We are both praying and waiting but why does it have to take 21 months to finish Spouse's Sponsorship? I have all my files they have asked for and are need send to them with the rest of the documents. I know a guys who brought his wife to Canada in two months i dont know how but he just did it.

Dear Mme.

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

According to Canada Citizenship and Immigration each visa application is unique and considered on its own merit and there is no exact formula or an equal time frame.

I do hope that your visa file will be processed a.s.a.p

Please do come back and let us know how long it took at the end.

Best of Luck

Visit Visa during PR application to Canada
by: SUR

"CIC likes from applicants to disclose that they have PR applications in process. If you have a Job in Pakistan and some kind of social insurance. Ask your supervisor for a vacation letter and your social insurance credentials and head to the embassy. Ask for a multiple entry visa. Your PR and visitor applications serves different purposes, Canada allows it. The contrary is a popular myth. Your chances depends on what's in your application and your supporting docs"

Hi, This is something i found in search to know how feasible is it to apply for visit visa during PR application process.

Can you comment on this please!

Visit Visa during PR application to Canada
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Sur

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

CIC Canada acknowledge the possibility of "Dual Intent" - "An intention by a foreign national to become a permanent resident does not preclude them from becoming a temporary resident if the officer is satisfied that they will leave Canada by the end of the period authorized for their stay. The person's desire to work study or visit in Canada before or during the processing of an application for permanent residence may be
legitimate.

More information about "Dual intent" can be found in here

CIC Interview Questions for a Spouse Canadian Sponser Visa
by: Anonymous

Hello Everyone.

I read this thread and thought may be I can get some help or guidance from your experiences. Your response to the request will be appreciated.

Before I give a detail about my sponsor I want to mention, I am older then my husband, also, we are relative and it is arranged marriage but its 100 % real.

In addition, I put by mistake that my husband is not my relative actually he is.

I am assuming maybe our age difference is the issue here otherwise, all the requested docs were good.

Please guide and give any tips for his interview.

Checked with MP as well same answer every time.

I am tired and cannot think anything else other then my husband sponsor.

I sponsored my husband in Pakistan, application send to Mississauga office August 2009.

Application sent to ISB for process in OCT 2009 and then silent until May 2011.

June 01, 2011. Letter received from Islamabad requesting for PCC, some more pics after married and phone bills.

In addition, I added my ticket, passport stamp, and boarding pass to the requested docs.

I went to Pakistan for 2 weeks on June 12 2011.

On June 28 2011 I sent all the docs to Islamabad.

On July 01 2011 I sent an e-mail to the embassy asking them for an updated status, and got a reply saying your file is in process and queue for review, and the applicant would be called for an interview.

I am getting same answer for the last 11 months.

Please help.

CIC Interview Questions for a Spouse Canadian Sponser Visa
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Dear Madam

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer)

If I understand correctly then you have 2 main concerns

Processing time

According to the family sponsorship processing time that is published on the CIC website it takes 59 days to assess the sponsor (you) + 24 months to assess your spouse. (as of August 3 2011). So as you started the process on August 2009, you still have some time to wait.

Your spouse interview questions

I assume that many of the questions will relate to the relationships between you and your spouse, where did you meet, where did you get married, what does he know about your past and present life, your future plans etc?

I found on the web some testimonials from people who went through the interviews and you can find hereunder examples of the questions they were asked:

When and where did you meet your spouse for the first time? How did you meet your spouse? How old is your spouse? What is your spouse's birth date? What does your spouse do for a living? Where did your spouse go to school'? What degrees or formal training does your spouse have? How did your spouse immigrate to Canada? Where does your spouse work? Does your spouse like his or her job? What is the salary? Does your spouse have any hobbies? Describe them. Do you have any hobbies? Describe them.

What type of music do you enjoy? What type of music does your spouse enjoy? What kind of movies do you enjoy? What kind of movies does your spouse enjoy? What kind of books do you read? What kind of books does your spouse read? Where did you get married?

Who was at the wedding? Was your marriage arranged? If it was arranged describe how it was arranged and by whom? Do your family members (parents, siblings) want to immigrate to Canada? Did you marry your spouse so that you could sponsor your parents as landed immigrants of Canada? How do you correspond with your spouse? How often do you talk on the phone? Do you have phone bills, e-mails, cards, etc., and can I see them?

I suggest that you go over the questions try to think what else could be asked, be prepared and guide your spouse to answer the truth.

Best of Luck
Sharon
