Can I Work in Canada as a Nurse?

by Sahlee
(Philippines)

Can I work in Canada as a nurse even if I don't have any hospital working experience?

I took the IELTS just this Dec. and I got 6 band score. Do you think I can be a candidate for working in Canada? I'm still processing my student visa for UK as NVQ4, and I am planning to work in Canada after my course in UK

Working in Canada as a Nurse
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Sahlee

Thanks for your inquiry.

Let me first emphasize that I am not an immigration officer.

You did not indicate if you are a registered nurse (RN), or a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Both are considered regulated occupations, and in order to work as a nurse you must be registered with the regulatory body for your occupation.

The registration of nurses does not occur at the national level. In order to practice nursing you must be licensed or registered in the province or territory in which you will work. You will be required to write the Canadian Registered Nurses Examination as part of the registration process. At present, this examination can only be written in Canada on the recommendation of a provincial or territorial nurses association.

Your education and nursing skills will be evaluated to determine if you meet the standards in the regulator's province or territory. You may also be required to have a specific number of recent hours of nursing work experience. Work references may be required.

If you do not have work experience you can search for continuing education and training information opportunities available for you to qualify to work as a nurse in Canada by reviewing the Training Information section of the Working in Canada Report. or by visiting the Canadian network of National Associations of Regulators and the Canadian Council for Practical Nurses Regulators that is responsible for the safety of the public through the regulation of licensed practical nurses.

In order to prepare yourself thoroughly for applying to work as a nurse in Canada I would strongly recommend that you follow the workbook for newcomers to Canada

Mental Health Nurse
by: Chris

Hi,by 2012 I will have a degree in mental health nursing in the UK and my wife has a general nursing diploma (soon to be degree) with 6 years experience. We have researched quite a bit and found that Alberta or BC would be ideal for us although our dreams appear to have been shattered by reading that the cost of imigrating to Canada mounts up to circa £15K each what with the exams, traveling to sit exams, visa appliction costs etc. Can anyone advise us if this is accurate as it does seem over the top.It all seems tricky enough without costing this much too.Fingers crossed Thanks, Chris

How to apply to work as a nurse in Canada?
by: Anonymous

Hi

I have a diploma in nursing certificate from Malaysia.

I want to know if I can work in Canada as a nurse.

If yes, please tell me what it requires.

I understand that I have to write the Canadian nursing board exams and ielts but don't really know how to go about it.

Thanks and I anticipate your reply

Hi

Thanks for your inquiry (please note that I am not an immigration officer).

You can try to apply for a visa to Canada under the federal skilled worker application.
