Can an Australian Enrolled Nurse work in USA as a
Licenced Practical Nurse with a working visa

by Angie
(Sydney, Australia)

Hi Sharon

I'm an Australian resident with an interest in working in the USA.

I am a qualified Endorsed Enrolled Nurse in Australia which is the equivalent to a Licensed Practical Nurse in America.

I was hoping if you could tell me if there is any options for working in the US with a green card??

Where would I find out the correct information?

Please help,
Thank You
Angie

Can an Australian Enrolled Nurse work in USA as a Licenced Practical Nurse with a working visa
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Angie

Thanks for your inquiry (Please note that I am not an immigration officer).

To be eligible for a green card to the USA through employment and sponsorship you have to meet one of the following five categories - A priority worker, a professional with advanced degree or exceptional ability, skilled or professional worker, special immigrant and an immigrant investor.

Other than that you must have a permanent employment opportunity in the USA, which is quite hard to find.

A much easier and faster option is to apply for H1B work visa - To Qualify for the H1B Visa Program, you must work in a 'specialty occupation' like HealthCare/Medical. An H1B visa is typically valid for up to six years and entitles your spouse and children (under 21) to accompany you and live in the USA

One of the main advantages of the H1B visa is that it is a 'dual intent' visa which means that you can apply for a Green Card (Legal Permanent Residency).

For more information please visit H1 Base Visa. That helps people of all national origin and citizenship to live and work in the U.S.A.

Good Luck
Sharon

E-3 Visa is your option

Hi Angie,

There is a new visa only for Australian professionals that you can get and it does not cost your potential US employer a cent. The Specialty Occupation requirement is a MUST for this visa and as there is such a great demand for nurses here in the US, you wouldn't have a problem in getting an offer. You do have to be licensed by the State that you would like to work under in the US.

Check out Seek.com.au for healthcare opportunities for the US. I've seen ads there pretty much to help you take the state licensing nursing exam and then they even help you get a job.

I've been in the US for 6 months looking for work under a 12 month travel and work visa program and as my qualifications are not in demand here, i am going back to Australia to become an Enrolled Nurse just to be able to to return.

I've done a lot of research about the visas that would help me return so i hope this helps you achieve your dream of going to the US to work. Good luck and all the best!
