Am I Eligible to Work as a Caregiver in Canada?

by Maria Victoria Vergara
(Singapore)

I wanted to ask if I'm eligible to apply as a nanny/live in caregiver in Canada.

I had only attended 1 year of midwifery.

I have 3 years experienced working as a full time nanny in Taiwan,3 years in Dubai,3 years in Egypt and presently working as a full time nanny here in Singapore.

I'm 39 years old and I am planning to apply as a full time nanny/caregiver in Canada.

Thanks
Vic

Am I Eligible to Work as a Caregiver in Canada?
by: Sharon - Expats Guide

Hi Vic

Thanks for your inquiry.

Please note that I am not an immigration officer.

I did some research and found the following information:

The first thing you need to do is to find an employer in Canada.

The employer must apply to Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) to have their suggested job offer reviewed and to receive a positive job confirmation letter from HRSDC before hiring you. You will need to present a copy of the confirmation letter when you apply for a work permit, together with a written contract between you and your future employer.

You can find in here a sample of a contract for the live-in caregiver program

Only after you find an employer who is approved by HRSDC and only after you have a written contract you can apply for a Canadian Live-In Caregiver work visa.

You can find in here how to apply for a work visa to Canada

Other than that you have to meet the following requirements to be eligible for the Live-In Caregiver Program in Canada:

  1. You must have successfully completed the equivalent of Canadian high school education (secondary school).

  2. At least six months training, or at least one year of full-time paid work experience in the past three years in a field or occupation similar to what you will do as a live-in caregiver.

  3. You must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French so you can function on your own in your employer's home

  4. A work permit before you enter Canada.

More information can be found in here.

Important Tip: Under Canada's health insurance system, Canadian residents do not pay certain hospital and medical expenses. However, you or your employer may be required to pay for you to be covered by the insurance plan, depending on the province or territory in which you work.

When you arrive in Canada, contact the medical care or hospital insurance office in the province or territory where you work to find out about health insurance.

Should you need to arrange for a medical coverage, you can start by checking the following expatriate health insurance companies:

Aetna Global Benefits.

MultiNational Underwriters .

Good Luck

RULES of the cargiver program in Canada
by: Anonymous

Yup.. everything hereunder is correct.

I would suggest to try nannyseek.ca I have gone through the process and used a nanny agency.

If I only new about nannyseek.ca before it would be easier and at no cost, as i paid a lot for a nanny agency to find me a nanny and to do the paper work.
